Ghana celebrated its 67th Independence Day on March 6 with the usual parades and excitement. However, this year’s event in Tamale took a worrying turn as 72 people, including students, soldiers, and others, involved in the parade collapsed during the festivities.
The day meant to honor Ghana’s freedom from colonial rule, usually involves marches and parades by different groups. Unfortunately, the weather played a role this time, with the hot sun causing problems for those taking part.
At the Tamale Jubilee Park, where a parade was held, the heat led to 72 people suffering from severe dehydration. These included students, soldiers, and others who stood in the sun for a long time during the parade.
Yakubu Amin Abukari, the head of the Ghana Red Cross Society in the northern region and part of the medical team at the event, reported that all 72 individuals who collapsed have been revived. Dehydration caused by the scorching sun was identified as the main reason for their collapse.
