The Ministry of communication and Digitization, through a press release, has extended the deadline for the SIM card re-registration process, which started in October last year. The Ministry has now set 31st July as the new deadline for the registration.
According to the ministry, the extension will enable citizens who have still not registered their Ghana Cards to do so during the extension period.
“Due to a number of factors including the facts that over 7.5 million citizens and residents are yet to obtain Ghana card to enable them to register their SIM cards. It is clear that the deadline of completion of the registration of the remaining active sim cards cannot be met “.
The registration deadline which was set to end 31st March, this year, has seen many issues including people queuing at registration centers at dawn and others. This is going to give Ghanaians more room to comply with the said directive by the Ministry.
So far, the Ministry has confirmed to have over 14 Million SIM Cards linked to the Ghana Card, with over 10 Million SIM cards linked with their respective Bio-Captures. Also, there have been about 99,000 new SIM Cards registered during the period.
“As at 17th March, 14,091,542 sim cards have been linked to the Ghana Card, 10,348,532 Bio-Captures conducted and 99,445 new SIMs registered.”
Meanwhile, according to the ministry, the deadline extension will help them develop and facilitate a SIM Card registration self-service which will help register diplomats and Ghanaian residents abroad will want to register their SIM Cards.
