It is sad how accidents claim the lives of people every day. It saddens my heart to hear or see how easily lives are wasted because of road accidents. Poor roads, reckless driving, and poor maintenance of vehicles are parts of the causes of road accidents in the country.
An accident claimed the lives of 16 people at Gomoa Okyereko involving a Youtong bus with the registration number GT 5866-L and a Fuel Tanker with registration number WR 2063 in the early hours of Tuesday, May 30th 2023.
According to reports, 40 other people were injured and were rushed to the Trauma and Specialist Centre in Winneba for emergency treatment.
During an interview with Citi News, Central Region correspondent Calvis Tetteh, DO2 Kwesi Hughes, the Municipal Fire Officer for Winneba, said it’s possible the driver was sleepy or tired which could contribute to the occurrence of the horrific tragedy. He also added that the Youtong bus was believed to be traveling from Abidjan to Budumburam whiles the petrol tanker was also believed to be driving towards Takoradi from Accra.
The accident was so terrifying that it caused the sudden death of the bus conductor of the petrol tanker before the fire service could pull him out of the car. The Ghana National Fire service managed to rescue a lot of passengers who were trapped on the Youtong bus.
It’s so surprising that we still lack a straightforward dual highway between Cape Coast and Kumasi after 65 years of being an Independent country. We shouldn’t be losing lives because of poor roads and reckless driving because each life is so precious.
At the time we received this news, the Ghana Ambulance Service and the Police Service were on-site, providing support and assistance alongside the Ghana National Fire Service.
