A group of LGBTQI+ activists and their supporters gathered outside the Ghanaian High Commission in the United Kingdom on March 6, 2024. They were protesting against the anti-LGBTQ+ Bill, recently passed by the Parliament in Ghana.

Wilhemina Nyarko attends a rally against a controversial bill being proposed in Ghana’s parliament that would make identifying as LGBTQIA or an ally a criminal offense punishable by up to 10 years in prison, in the Harlem neighborhood of New York on Monday, Oct 11, 2021. “It’s a scary bill,” says Nyarko, who is from Ghana and has lived in New York for thirty years. “I felt I needed to come and support this.” (AP Photo/Emily Leshner)

About 100 people, wearing colorful dresses with gay pride colors, held banners asking for the Bill to be canceled. A video from Asaase Radio in Accra showed people speaking at the protest. Some talked about how the bill would cause pain, while others encouraged everyone to stand up for the rights of LGBTQ+ people.

One activist said, “They are pushing many of us away, but this time not on a slave ship, but on a piece of paper filled with hate, written by people like them.”

Anti-LGBTQ+

The anti-LGBTQ+ Bill makes LGBTQ+ activities illegal and bans supporting or talking about them. People caught doing these things could go to jail for six months to three years. Those promoting or funding LGBTQ+ activities might face a jail term of three to five years.

The President of Ghana, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, has decided not to sign the Bill into law for now. He says there are legal challenges to the new law, and the Supreme Court is looking into whether it goes against the constitution
