Alphonso Davies has shared how he almost joined the Ghana Black Stars squad. Alphonso Davies’s journey started in Ghana when his parents fled from Liberia to seek refuge in Ghana.
He was born in Buduburam, Ghana, on November 2, 2000, and they later had to go to Canada, settling in Edmonton, where he started his football career.
The Canada superstar officially became a citizen of Canada on June 6, 2017, and joined the national team. A once-in-a-generation talent, Davies was soon on the national team’s radar.
He had already represented the country at U17 and U20 levels when he was called up for the senior side, debuting against Curaçao on June 14, 2017.
However, the Canadian superstar shared how he almost joined the Ghana national team, but circumstances did not make room for that.
According to Alphonso, Ghana never reached out to him until he had shortly joined Bayern Munich, and an individual from the Federation of Ghana reached out to him through his Instagram account.
“Ghana never reached out, and also, my mom was like, “Nah. I wasn’t even playing at the academy because I wasn’t a big name. I think when the news came out that I was going to Bayern, then I got a message from the Ghana Federation; I think it was someone on a federation”. He said.
Speaking further, he said, “They texted me on Instagram, because they didn’t have my number, didn’t have like an email or something. But it was too late at that time; I had already got my citizenship. I already made it to Canada”.
