On November 11, 2023, the Recording Academy unveiled its highly anticipated list of nominations, sending ripples of excitement across the global music community. For African artists, this year held particular significance as the newly introduced category, “Best African Music Performance,” promised to acknowledge and celebrate the rich diversity of musical expressions from the continent.
The nominations for the category featured great artists, with four Nigerian artists and one South African vying for the prestigious Grammy. The artists and their nominated songs included Asake & Olamide with “Amapiano,” Burnabwoy with “City Boys,” and Davido ft. Musa Key with “Unavailable,” Ayra Starr with “Rush,” and Tyla representing South Africa with “Water.”
Among the nominated artists, Asake, a Nigerian music sensation, celebrated his recognition. The event will be broadcast on CBS and Paramount, with the annual Grammy Awards Premiere Ceremony preceding the main show. The introduction of the “Best African Music Performance” category marks, a pivotal moment in the recognition of African artists on the global stage. Approved during the Recording Academy’s semi-annual Board of Trustees meeting in May 2023, this gave Ghanaians the hope that there is a high probability that a Ghanaian artist will be nominated.
However Ghanaians were highly disappointed when no Ghanaian artist was nominated, they voiced their disappointment on various social media platforms with some lambasting Ghanaian artists because they felt they were not doing enough.
