Celebrating Ghanaian Women in Tech 2022

In a society where it was once believed that only the male child that needed to be educated, and as such most corporate jobs were dominated by males, it is exhilarating to see women, particularly black women, break the bias and rise to the top both on the national and global scale. It is refreshing to see women entering professions in tech-related fields such as science, technology, engineering, and maths.

This is one of the many reasons why the international community has designated March as a month to honor women all over the world who are breaking barriers and setting new standards globally.

These women inspire and mentor the younger generation of females that no matter how difficult and intimidating the tech industries may be, young women, particularly young Ghanaian women can work and achieve great success in this sector.

In light of this, and of the recently celebrated International Women’s Day (IWD), that mytechhubgh seeks to highlight Ghanaian women who are accomplishing amazing things in the field of technology and also to commend their successes and encourage young girls why we need more women in tech.

Women in tech statistics

The ratio of men to women in the technology industry remains high, but it is better than it was previously.

According to Ghanaweb, the percentage of women working in some of the world’s largest IT companies, such as Amazon and Google, was around 34.4 percent in February 2022.

It is then laudable to encourage more women by praising the ones currently making such wonderful and tremendous strides in the industry of technology.

1. Regina Honu

She is a Ghanaian social entrepreneur, a software developer, and the founder of Soronko Solutions. It is a software development company based in Ghana.

She also recently opened the Soronko Academy, the first of its kind; a coding and human-centered design school for children and young adults in West Africa.

One of the few women making significant contributions to Africa’s development through innovative technological solutions. Regina has received multiple awards, including being named by CNN as one of the inspirational women who rock STEM, being named as one of the six (6) women making an impact in Tech in Africa, and one of the ten female entrepreneurs to watch in growing economies.

Her achievements have attracted international recognition, including features on CNN African Voices, BBC, Deutsche Welle, Aljazeera, and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation’s Impatient Optimist blog.

In one of such interviews with CNN, Regina is described as a Ghanaian tech guru who wants to develop the next generation of women in technology.

She started the Tech Needs Girls Ghana movement. It aims to train and educate more Ghanaian girls to study technology-related courses.

2. Angela Kyerematin-Jimoh

She is the latest to make herself and Ghana proud after being appointed as the strategic partner lead for Africa at Microsoft’s new Africa transformation office.

Before joining Microsoft, Angela was the first female and first African Executive Director and Regional Head for IBM north, east and west Africa.

There she advanced IBM’s hybrid cloud and AI momentum across 35 countries in Africa.

She has also served as Head of Consumer banking for GT bank Ghana and Head of Prestige banking for UBA bank Ghana. She has over 20 years of experience in leadership, sales, and marketing across the financial services and technology sector, both nationally and globally.

Angela currently sits on multiple boards, including the board of the central bank of Ghana.

3. Ivy Barley

Currently working as a programs manager and data scientist at Microsoft’s headquarters in the United States of America, Ivy is a young and vibrant mathematician who is relentlessly working her way up the ladder in the global tech space.

For most of her job, Ivy uses complex machine learning algorithms to build predictive models for meaningful information and business decisions. She graduated from the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology with a bachelor’s degree in Actuarial science and a master’s degree in Mathematical statistics.

Her passion for teaching and mentoring young girls led her to co-found Developers in Vogue.

The first setup in 2017, Developers in Vogue is a female-focused science technology engineering and maths (STEM) organization for highly skilled developers who seek to use technology to bring change to communities and beyond. She also offers training, mentorship, job placement, and business incubation for African women in tech.

4. Lucy Quist

She was formerly Chief Executive Officer of Airtel, one of Ghana’s largest telecommunications companies and industry leader in data and digital innovations, Lucy Quist is an international business leader who believes passionately in harnessing the potential of people to deliver outstanding results in business to improve society.

Currently, she is a managing director for an American-owned multinational investment bank and financial services company, Morgan Stanley. Before going into the telecommunications industry in 2008, Lucy was a change manager at the Bank of Scotland.

She’s also co-founded a digital payment platform located in the Democratic Republic of Congo called FreshPay and has pushed for more and more youth to actively participate in STEM and take advantage of the opportunities it offers.

Lucy serves on several international and local boards such as the International Board for African Institute for Mathematical Sciences (AIMS), Petra Trust Company Ltd., the Business Environment Enabling Programme under UKAID, and the Industry Advisory Board for Ashesi University and the Exploratory.

She is also a founding member of the Executive Women Network, a non-profit organization of women in senior management and executive positions committed to inspiring, empowering, and supporting women executives to succeed.

5. Mary Abena Serwaa Dickson

Currently working as Marketing Manager for the Accra-based software development company, Nalo Solutions, Mary Abena Serwaa Dickson, has become a force to reckon in Ghana’s ever-growing Digital Marketing space.

For most of her job, Mary employs current digital marketing trends and strategies in Content creation, Social Media, PPC, etc. to maximize the online presence of her organization. She also runs a Youtube channel, Tech Hub GH, where she shares her knowledge on how small businesses can maximize their digital marketing channels.

Mary is the founder of Wemompreneurs which aims to support young mothers in entrepreneurship for the past seven (7) years.

She is the founder of eSells Ghana and also chief editor of the Woman on a Mission(WOM) Journal, which has sold 500 copies worldwide. A yearly journal aimed at helping all women prioritize and organize their lives and busy schedules so that they are able to meet goals and targets.
