Ghana’s national football team, the Black Stars, faces a significant shift as head coach Chris Hughton is relieved of his duties, according to an official statement from the Ghana Football Association (GFA). The GFA stated, “Chris Hughton has been relieved of his duties as head coach of the senior National team with immediate effect.” In tandem with this decision, the GFA Executive Council has opted to dissolve the technical team of the Black Stars.
In response to these changes, the GFA assured stakeholders of forthcoming plans, stating, “The Ghana Football Association will in the coming days provide a roadmap on the future direction of the Black Stars.” This strategic move follows the Black Stars’ exit from AFCON 2023 without a win in their three group games.
Hughton, who took charge in February 2023 succeeding Otto Addo, faced the task of overseeing Ghana’s AFCON 2023 qualifiers, leading the team to the tournament in Ivory Coast, and supervising the commencement of the Stars’ 2026 World Cup qualifiers. Hughton’s journey with the Black Stars began as the Technical Adviser, a role he retained for the Qatar tournament. Stakeholders now await the unveiling of a strategic roadmap, marking a crucial juncture for Ghana’s national football team.
