Facebook adds Peggy Alford to their board of directors

Tech industry veteran, Peggy Alford, has been nominated to the board of directors of Facebook.

She is the first black woman to serve on the board and the second black person to join the board.

In a public statement by Facebook founder, Mark Zuckerberg, the board is thrilled to have the experience and expertise of Peggy at Facebook, and they look forward to her helping hand in addressing the opportunities and challenges facing the company.

Background of Peggy Alford

The tech industry veteran has previously served in leadership positions at Rent.com and eBay.com. She took on the role of Senior Vice President of Core Markets at PayPal this year.

Prior to joining the PayPal team, she was the Chief Financial Officer and Head of Operations for the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative; an organization created by Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg and his wife Priscilla Chan that is designed to use technology as a solution to better education and change the criminal justice system.

Facebook Founder, Mark Zuckerberg remarks on Peggy’s Nomination

“I’m excited to share that Facebook’s board of directors has nominated Peggy Alford to join our board. Peggy has deep experience in many areas related to commerce and our business.”

He added that “Peggy is a thoughtful leader across multiple disciplines from business management to finance operations and product development. I’ve learned a lot working with her at CZI and I look forward to how she will help us address the opportunities and challenges facing our company.”

“They are two of wisest people I have had the opportunity to work with. I’m grateful for everything they’ve done to advance Facebook’s mission and for all they’ve taught me over the past eight years.”

The nomination however means that long serving Facebook board members Reed Hastings and Erskine Bowles will depart the board. This is evidence of the company’s quest to bring about diversity in leadership.
