Actress Akofa Edjeani has shared insights into the challenges of financial sustainability within the local movie industry. During an interview on Joy FM’s Showbiz A-Z, she highlighted the need for established systems when she entered the acting profession.
Acknowledging the sacrifices made by herself and her colleagues, she emphasized their role in laying the groundwork for the present actors in the industry.
Akofa Edjeani admitted that financially she has not done much despite her dedication to the craft. Akofa noted that the current generation of filmmakers benefits from the efforts and sacrifices made by earlier contributors.
“We really didn’t have one. So we were doing things, sacrificing a lot to make sure that others could come and enjoy it.
“So all the new people enjoying now, they’re enjoying on the back of a sweat [put in by others]. We laid the foundation for what is happening now…Financially, I haven’t done too well with that,” Akofa Edjeani told the host Kwame Dadzie.
She expresses her satisfaction despite the fact she is financially not doing that much, because of the inspiration the audience gets from her. Also the feedback she gets from the audience knowing that in some way or the she is influencing individuals’ lives positively makes her successful and happy.
“I take my craft seriously, so the effort that I put in and the feedback that I get, the people that are happy watching us, watching me in particular, to know that you gave somebody hope, you inspired somebody”.
“Because of you, somebody changed their ways for the better, because of you, somebody got into some business, so in that sense, I’m very successful and I’m happy about it
However, she emphasized the need for improvement within the industry, particularly regarding financial compensation. She believes that more should be done to enhance various aspects, including remuneration, to create a more prosperous environment for those in the field. “it could be a whole lot better.”
