Five Ways In Controlling Your Anger.

Anger has done more harm than good to those who cannot control it. You’ll come to agree with me that anger can make you do or say things that you regret later.

In most cases, people go to the extent of taking the lives of other people just because they can’t control their anger. Getting angry is natural, and nobody can escape it. Many people find themselves in so many unpleasant situations caused by anger.

In as much as we cannot avoid getting angry, we can control it in many instances and situations.

“ Anger is like a storm rising up from the bottom of your consciousness. When you feel it coming, turn your focus to your breath.” – Thich Nhat Hanh.

“Whoever is slow to anger has great understanding, but he who has a hasty temper exalts folly,” according to Proverbs 14:29.

Here are five ways to help you control or manage your anger whenever you get angry or are about to get angry.

  • Be silent; When you’re angry, do not talk. This is because, when you do, you might end up saying things you regret later. Being silent when you get angry helps a lot. It helps to avoid unnecessary arguments, which may end in a fight.
  • Be calm about the situation; Calmness is very golden and key when it comes to anger. Being calm when you get angry can solve so many things. It helps avoid exchanging words with the other person. It makes you analyze the situation at hand.
  • Walking away from the situation; To avoid saying something you will regret later or using vague words, calmly and gently walk away from the problem or the situation. Walking away doesn’t mean you’re a loser or weak. It simply means you don’t want to be there to be more angry, and it doesn’t also mean you’re being disrespectful. Just walk away peacefully.
  • Get yourself engaged; You know getting angry can make you sad and very emotional, and at times it can also make you think about negative things at the same time. It can be so disturbing and overwhelming. Trust me, getting yourself engaged is the best thing to do to calm yourself down. When I say getting yourself engaged, I mean watching television, reading, playing games, or even sleeping. In short, get yourself busy with something just to avoid being bored or visiting the situation.

And after doing all these things, there’s one last thing that will make you calm, sober, and reserved about everything.

  • Avoid explanations; Don’t talk about the situation anymore. You know, after you do all the steps given above, you become so calm and quiet, but you still have the event playing in your memory, so do not talk about what happened. If you do, it will surely bring another argument and could lead to more anger. So just pretend nothing happened, and everything will be fine. In some situations, you will want to explain things or solve issues; just make sure you do not do that with harsh words or controversy. But I would rather that you do not talk about it anymore. Let sleeping dogs lie, and everything will be fine.

These are five steps to controlling or managing your anger. Try them, and you will know how to relate to people in so many ways. At your workplace, in your marriage, in your relationship, and wherever you find yourself.
