Media personality Bernard Avle has urged fellow journalists to keep their integrity even as they gain celebrity status within the profession.

Bernard Avle is known for his significant contributions to journalism in Ghana. He is a respected and influential media personality, recognized for his clear analysis, engaging presentation style, and passion for addressing pressing issues in Ghana.

Bernard Avle

Speaking on his morning show, *Citi Breakfast Show* on Thursday, April 11, 2024, Avle discussed the changing landscape of journalism, highlighting concerns about focusing too much on fame and social media metrics over journalistic principles.

Avle reflected on the evolution of Ghanaian television, especially in the late 1990s.

“In the past, actors were skilled, and journalism standards were high. Things have changed; journalists have become celebrities,”

Avle said during the show. “The profession isn’t the same anymore. In the past, journalists often worked part-time and held other jobs, but now they need to commit full-time. Journalists used to be role models, and we should strive for purity and dedication in the profession.”

The seasoned journalist voiced his concerns about the decline of in-depth journalism and critical thinking, attributing it to the prevalence of quick, superficial content.

“Detailed stories are becoming rare as articles often consist of just a few paragraphs, affecting our ability to think deeply. We must encourage more in-depth reporting and thoughtful analysis,” Avle said.

Avle urged his colleagues to stay focused on the core principles of journalism and resist the trappings of fame. “The foundation of journalism is verifying information. This is a reminder to myself as well—do not let fame and fortune overshadow your role as a journalist. Stay true to your profession and remember your roots,” Avle concluded.
