The Argentine superstar, often regarded as one of the greatest players of all time, who has been a symbol of FC Barcelona for the past few years, revealed he was keen on joining Barcelona.
Lionel Messi signed a two-year contract in 2021 with Paris Saint Germain after his departure from FC Barcelona. The contract, on the other hand, expired at the just-ended 2022-2023 football season, which brought an end to the relationship between Messi and Paris Saint-Germain.
Football lovers were curious and anxious about which football club the seven times Ballon d’Or winner would be joining.
Al Hilal made all necessary efforts to sign him, but it was unfortunate on the side of the team as Messi debunked their proposal.
It was, however, rumored that Barcelona was keen on signing the Argentine superstar, but with the financial status of the club, it was impossible.
On June 7, 2023, Messi officially signed a contract with Inter Miami, which fascinated many football lovers.
However, in an exclusive interview, Messi disclosed that he is always keen on returning to Barcelona because it is the club he has always loved, but he is not sure what will happen next.
“I was dreaming of Barca’s return, yes; but I was never sure about that happening because I remember very well the story of August 2021, two years ago. I did”.
Speaking further, he said, “I’d love to be close to Barcelona in the future, for sure. I will live in Barcelona again with my family; it’s already decided. I hope to help the club one day because it’s the club I love”.
In the interview, Messi made the shocking revelation that certain individuals from the Barcelona camp see his return as a disadvantage to the club.
“I’m not sure if Barca did everything possible to make it happen, honestly; I just know what Xavi told me. I’m sure that there are people in the club that do not want me to return to Barca, considering that negative for the club”. He said
He also disclosed that Barcelona’s failure to sign him was never related to money issues.
“Money has never been an issue with me. We didn’t even discuss the contract with Barcelona! They sent me a proposal, but it was never an official, written, and signed proposal. We never negotiated my salary. It wasn’t about money; otherwise, I was going to join Saudi”.
