Instagram will restrict adults from DM’ing teens

Instagram will restrict adults from DM’ing teens. Instagram is trying to make its platform safer for teenagers. As a result, rolling out new policies for its users to limit the interactions between adults and young users on their platform.

“Protecting young people on Instagram is important to us. Today, we’re sharing updates on new features and resources as part of our ongoing efforts to keep our youngest community members safe,” the Facebook-owned company explained.

Adults will no longer be able to send a direct message to teenagers who don’t follow them. This policy makes sure that teens rather establishes the connection, giving them control over who they text and vice versa. “For example, when an adult tries to message a teen who doesn’t follow them, they receive a notification that DM’ing them isn’t an option.”

Teens who already have established a connection with adults they don’t follow, will be sent notification on the risks involved in texting people you don’t follow. They can either restrict, report or block them on the go.

Making it more difficult for adults to find and follow teens

Instagram per their own algorithms will no longer recommend teens to adults for them to follow. This will be done according to the age range you signed up your Instagram account with. Instagram will restrict adults from seeing teen accounts from the “suggested users”. This will prevent them from seeing teen contents from reels or explore and automatically hide teen comments on public posts.

Instagram is encouraging teens to make their account private.

This way teens can have better control over their content. They can see who can interact with their content they post on Instagram.
