Ghanaian rapper Strongman recently commented on the perceived shift in Christian prayer habits upon achieving financial success. His remarks shed light on a widely debated topic, questioning whether affluence impacts religious commitment differently across various faiths.
In his response to a tweet attributing religiosity in Africa to poverty, Strongman brought attention to the trend of Christians supposedly altering their prayer routines when experiencing success. This observation, according to him, raises the perception that only poverty draws Christians closer to God in the African context.
The tweet he responded to highlighted the perspective of someone whose sister had relocated to the UK, citing how a higher standard of living, where a minimum wage suffices for monthly groceries and job opportunities are more accessible without connections, seemingly diminishes the need for prolonged prayer and religious zeal.
“My Sis relocated to the UK and is telling me the only reason religion zealousness thrives in Africa is because of poverty. If your minimum wage in 8hrs can buy you groceries for a whole month, and finding a Job doesn’t need LINKS, u won’t spend 6hrs praying at church in tongues”.
However, Strongman challenged this notion by contrasting the religious practices of Christians with those of Muslims in prosperous nations like Saudi Arabia, Dubai, Qatar, and Kuwait. He emphasized that despite significant wealth in these countries, Muslims maintain a steadfast commitment to their religious obligations, performing the five daily prayers without compromise.
“Go to Saudi Arabia, Dubai, Qatar, Kuwait, etc and see how rich the Arabs are ……. but they still pray 5 times a day It’s always the Christians that have issues with God when they make small money”, he stated in his post.
His assertion draws attention to a perceived difference which is that while Christians, according to Strongman’s observation, exhibit a change in prayer habits when financial success is achieved, individuals of other faiths, specifically highlighting Muslims in affluent nations, continue to uphold their religious duties irrespective of financial prosperity.
