Meditation is practiced in the various religions we have. It has been proven that it is a powerful tool for one to have a close relationship with their maker, or a supreme being, and also for self-development.

Even though there isn’t any right to mediation, it is important to have some time to meditate. There are several types of meditation, and their importance. Today I would like to take you through 8 types of meditation and their importance to the human body, brain, and heart.

Types of mediation

1. Mantra

This type of meditation involves the repetition of words or phrases. It is just like mindfulness meditation. The repetition of mantra helps in breath control and controls the mind. It ushers the meditator into the field of a clear and pure conscience. Mantra helps one to be focused and sharpens the mind for deeper thinking.

This type is practiced with the aid of prayer beads( mala). Mantra may be done in so many ways. Chanting, speaking, and whispering repeatedly, either undertone or aloud, is practiced in many regions, such as Hinduism and Buddhism, and it is attributed to “spiritual powers.”

2. Brain or soundwave meditation

This is one of the most interesting meditations that a lot of people enjoy. Listening to music and meditating at the same time helps the brain relax. This type of meditation is also known as binaural beats and it uses the five frequencies beta, alpha, theta, delta, and gamma.

Apart from being relaxed, it is believed that brainwave meditation can also open your mind to new and brilliant ideas. It also helps one to become more creative and innovative. This type of meditation can be practiced by anyone.

3. Walking

Most people like to practice this type of meditation because it creates awareness of the body, mind, and physical sensations. Taking a walk in a serene atmosphere becomes productive and makes one very sensitive to things happening around them.

This type can be used as an exercise in which the stepping of the foot from one step to the next creates a meditative mind. It calms the mind and sharpens the brain’s self-awareness. Walking meditation can help bring your mind to important things and also teach you how to plan your day and have a stress-free life.

4. Mindfulness or insight

This type of meditation is also known as Vipassana, which is also the oldest kind of meditation in Buddhist practice. Mindfulness is the practice of deeply focusing your mind. It can promote relaxation and a better sense of inner peace.

This method comes from the Satipatthana Sutta [Foundations of Mindfulness]. Mindfulness reduces anxiety, improves mental wellness, promotes brain plasticity, helps treat addiction, and relieves stress.

5. Visualization

This type involves the imagination of specific experiences or cultivates feelings such as gratitude, forgiveness, and connection. Scenes like picturing a bird flying in the sky, and flowers opening and closing in the body is created in the mind during this meditation.

Visualizations help in the treatment of depression, stress, and anxiety. A study says visualization helps to lower blood pressure and stress hormones when the body and mind are silent.

6. Spiritual Meditation

This type of meditation is practiced among religious groups. Spiritual meditation focuses on developing a deeper understanding of spiritual and religious connection with a higher power. This meditation can be practiced at home, in lonely places, or in any worship center.

This practice is important to those who want to build deeper relationships or connections with a spiritual force or a higher power. Christian contemplative prayer, Sufi dhikr (remembrance of God), and Jewish kabbalistic practices are examples of spiritual meditation.

7. Progressive relaxation

This practice is done to reduce tension in the body and help the body relax. Progressive relaxation is a form of meditation that involves slowly tightening and relaxing one muscle group at a time throughout the body.

it may also help you to imagine a smooth wave flowing through your body to help release any tension. This practice helps reduce stress and gives a clear mind for peaceful sleep.

8. Transcendental Meditation

This practice is for those who want an easy approach to the depth that meditation offers. Transcending meditation practice is designed to quiet the mind and induce a state of calm and peace. It was founded by Maharishi Mahesh Yogi.

The practice involves the use of a private mantra and is practiced for 20 minutes twice per day while sitting comfortably with one’s eyes closed. It helps prevent cardiovascular disease and also reduces blood pressure.
