The Ministry of Communications has inaugurated 10 Automatic Weather Stations for the Ghana Meteorological services (GMET).
The project has equipped 10 weather stations with advanced equipment that can collect data 24/7 for efficient meteorological reporting.
Speaking at the inauguration in Tema on Friday, Director General of the GMET, Dr. Michael Mawuko Tanu indicated that over the years the agency had to work with obsolete technology and low technical staff. This led to the closure of several stations.
The new equipment will thus mitigate current challenges at the National Meteorological and Hydrological Services, while allowing them to maintain the manual stations.
He said the new equipment was purchased based on the recommendations of the World Meteorological Organization.
“The equipment is self-recording and disseminates information collected to required destinations in a timely manner.”
The vision however, is to acquire more of these equipment to make the Ghana Metrological services, one of the best in the sub region.
At her turn, the Minister for Communications, Hon. Mrs. Ursula Owusu Ekuful declared that the newly equipped stations were made possible via the World Bank’s E-transform Project.
The project aims to use technology and digitization to improve economies in every sector including weather reporting which affects every facet of our lives.
The 10 Automatic Weather Stations for the Ghana Metrological services (GMET) was undertaken at total cost of $450,000.
She urged on the GMET to maintain the equipment so they can serve them better and last longer.

The stations are situated at Tema, Big Ada, Akuse, Sewi Bekwai, Abetifi, Axim Enchi, Akosombo, Akim Odo and Tarkwa.
The initiative is expected to support ongoing and upcoming governmental developmental projects and boost Ghana’s aviation hub.
