Rich Ghanaian Foods And Ethnic Groups Associated With It

In Ghana, there are lots of ethnic groups, like the Akan, Mole-Dagbon, Ewe, Ga-Dangme, Gurma, Guan, Grusi, Kussasi, and the Bikpakpaam, also known as Konkomba people. Each group brings its special flavor to the food scene in Ghana.

For Ghanaians, food is not just something to eat – it’s like a way of saying who they are. Let’s look at some yummy dishes and the groups that enjoy them the most.

1. Kenkey

The Ga-Adangbe people, especially the Ga folks, really love Kenkey. It’s a heavy and filling dish made from maize grains that are fermented, baked, and mixed with uncooked dough. People enjoy Kenkey all year round with hot pepper and fried fish.

2. Fufu

The Akan people really like Fufu. It’s made by pounding cassava and plantain together. You can eat Fufu at any time of the day, and it’s usually served with delicious soups like Palm nut soup.

3. Akple

The Ewe folks, who you can find in Ghana’s Volta and Oti regions, have a special dish called Akple. It’s not common for other groups, which makes it unique. Akple is made from corn flour boiled with hot water, and it’s served with okra and Agbavi.

4. Etsew

The Fante people love Etsew. Similar to Banku, but without cassava dough. Etsew is made from maize and is usually eaten with vegetables, pepper, and fish. You make it by boiling water, adding corn flour, and mixing until it’s solid. Even non-Ghanians enjoy this dish!

5. Wasawasa

The Dagombas,  from the northern parts of Ghana, really like Wasawasa. It’s a special dish made from ground-dried yam leaves that are steamed. It’s a bit spicy and goes well with vegetables. They make it by mixing the flour in water, adding pepper, oil, and other spices, and boiling it.

Ghana is like a big buffet with different groups bringing their delicious dishes to the table. From the tasty Kenkey of the Ga people to the comforting Fufu of the Akans and the unique Wasawasa of the Dagombas, Ghana’s food scene is a mix of flavors.

Trying these dishes is not just about food; it’s like taking a fun journey through the diverse communities that make Ghana awesome. So, if you want to taste some unique and delicious foods, Ghana’s got you covered.
