Signal messenger reports unprecedented growth after WhatsApp’s controversial policy. The silicon valley-based company is planning to recruit more employees to improve its services and provide support for its infrastructural systems. Brain Acton who is the co-owner of signal stated in an email to reuteurs.com, “we’ve seen unprecedented growth this past week, it’s safe to say that because of this record growth, we’re even more interested in finding talented people “. It’s no wonder signal is being marketable, because the only thing they’re promising their users is a more robust privacy setting to ensure that all its user’s data safely stored.

Signal, alongside Telegram, have been the main benefactors of the public outrage of the new WhatsApp policy. Telegram was the most downloaded app both (apple store and play store) in January 2021, hitting 63 million downloads globally. Telegram also stated that they have also surpassed a milestone of 500 million active users. Founded in 2013 by Pavel Durov, Telegram is yet another end-to-end encrypted messaging app that focuses on keeping their users’ data safe.

Brian Acton also stated that Signal was striving to enhance its video and group chat functions, allowing Signal to compete more effectively with WhatsApp, Microsoft Teams, and other conferencing apps that have become indispensable in daily life over the last year.

According to a sense tower report, Signal gained 17.8 million user downloads in seven days, while WhatsApp saw a 17 percent drop in downloads, totaling 10.6 million user downloads. After series of violations regarding Facebook privacy issues, users are questioning WhatsApp LLC capacity in protecting their users’ interests and data. Hence, Signal has gained the support of many privacy advocacy groups. Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla, Jack Dorsey, CEO of Twitter, and Edward Snowden, a privacy advocate, have all advocated for a switch to Signal because of their comprehensive end-to-end encryption available. Signal runs as a non-profit organization, which saw a $50 million donation from Brian Acton as funding fees for the launch of Signal back in 2018.
