Bill Gates and Paul Allen launched Microsoft on April 4, 1975, to develop and market BASIC interpreters for the Altair 8800. With MS-DOS in the mid-1980s, it dominated the personal computer operating system industry.

It has gradually expanded from the operating system industry during the 1990s and has undertaken a number of corporate acquisitions, the greatest of which was the $26.2 billion acquisition of LinkedIn in December 2016, followed by the $8.5 billion acquisition of Skype Technologies in May 2011.
