The Passing Of The Anti-LGBTQI+ Bill Will Hurt Ghana’s Economy – US Ambassador To Ghana

The anti-LGBTQI+ bill was passed on Wednesday, February 28, 2024, criminalizing LGBTQI+ activities and prohibiting their promotion, advocacy, and funding.

Under the bill, individuals engaged in such activities face a jail term ranging from six months to three years, while promoters and sponsors could be sentenced to three to five years.

Anti-LGBTQI+ Bill

This has sparked a lot of discussion among Ghanaians with many surprised with the reaction of some Ghanaians concerning the bill that was passed yesterday, to some Ghanaians it shouldn’t be passed since it infringes on the human rights of certain individuals.

However, the US ambassador to Ghana Virginia E. Palmer also showed her concern with the anti-LGBTQI+ bill.

Anti-LGBTQI+ Bill

According to her, it saddens her because she knows some smart and creative individuals in Ghana who are LGBT, and with the bill passed it away their human rights, she also stressed the fact that this affects all Ghanaians as well.

She further stated that passing the bill would hurt Ghana’s international reputation and Ghana’s economy.
