Charitable faith-based organizations, or churches, are excluded from paying income taxes on their main operations since they are established as limited companies by guarantee. This implies that the churches are not registered to participate in profit-making operations.
However, these churches that are categorized as non-profit organizations are to register with the Registrar of Companies.
Meanwhile, in a recent interview with acting Registrar General Jemima Oware furiously stated that thousands of churches in Ghana have not renewed their registration.
According to her she has notified the churches of their renewal and has even made contact with them to renew their registration, but nothing has been done on the side of the churches.
As a result of that, the Registrar of Companies will go after them, to close them down.
“Churches, that is companies limited by guarantee. Those that are categorized as non-profit, over thousands of them have not refilled their tax returns, they have not renewed their registration. I have given them notice and called them, but they did not do anything about it. “ She stated.
