Mental health is a critical issue in Ghana that has been largely overlooked by society for many years. According to the World Health Organization, mental health problems affect around 12% of Ghanaians, but only an untraceable fraction of those individuals receive proper care and support.
There are many factors contributing to the lack of attention given to mental health in Ghana. Stigma and discrimination surrounding mental health conditions have caused many individuals and families to suffer in silence, fearing judgment and ostracisation from their communities. Additionally, Ghana’s limited resources and understaffed mental health facilities make it difficult for individuals to access adequate treatment and support.
Despite these challenges, there have been recent efforts to improve mental health care in Ghana. The Ghana Mental Health Authority was established in 2013 to address mental health issues and promote awareness, and various non-governmental organisations are working to raise awareness and provide support to those in need.
Abysmal Production with the Untamed Empire and other partners have joined forces to organize regular events calling on all individuals especially, young adults and children to come out and socialize with the rest of their communities while discussing mental health issues and expressing themselves through creative arts.
Abysmal production is a non-governmental organisation which consists of experienced individuals from the University of Ghana who have come together with the event giant Untamed Empire in Accra to host mental health victims and enthusiasts occasionally. This is with the aim of bridging the gab between the victimised and the ordinary person who has found answers to the Voices In Their Head.
Ewoenam, a key member to this initiative made a profound statement, “Just as people crave treatments when feeling head aches, so should it be for anyone who has mental health issues” as well.
The maiden show which happened on the 29th April 2023 featured prominent mental health advocates, life coaches and several artists who resort to Art as their form of therapy.
SwypAm as a media partner commend the Abysmal production team for putting such an initiative together in times like this. The joy and participation from all patrons is a clear sign that with a step at a time, we shall experience the expected change fully.
To anybody fighting their silent battles mentally, voices in my head sends out lots of love your way. Just keep holding on.
