Whatsapp announced its new policy in February, but didn’t expect the backlash and intended boycott of the app from its users. It, therefore, had to postpone its deadline date to May 15, as they believed users didn’t understand the terms properly but rather shifted to listening to false information about their new policy.
What exactly is the new policy about
WhatsApp plans to share all their user’s data with Facebook to be able to generate revenue from their app. Concerning this, Whatsapp will share information about its users such as phone numbers, contacts and transactions(WABusiness), and other related information with Facebook. This is to mainly improve advertising-related revenues for them. These data collected will be primarily used to show more relevant advertisements. Whatsapp will know your chat behavior and habits, an example is at what time you chat often, all this information will be stored by WhatsApp to allow businesses to understand their target audience. “We will explore ways for you and businesses to communicate with each other on WhatsApp, you may receive flight status for upcoming travel or a receipt for something you purchased.” Whatsapp LLC stated in their policy statement.
Why should you accept the terms?
Well, unfortunately, there is not much you could do. Rather WhatsApp has made this policy a take it or leave it option where users cannot opt-out. You can alternatively switch to other messaging apps like Signal or Telegram. We will have to trust WhatsApp for not sharing our private chats with Facebook, as that is the only option we have. If you don’t accept this policy before May 15, WhatsApp will have no option but to delete your account in 120days.
