WhatsApp has announced in a blog post that it has finally rolled out its disappearing videos and images feature called view once. The feature allows you to select the “view once” option when sending videos or pictures to someone. This way, pictures or videos sent are deleted as soon as the receiver views them.
According to WhatsApp, “not everything we share needs to become a permanent digital record “. Therefore, the need to automatically delete these videos or images from the receiver’s camera roll.
“While taking photos or videos on our phones has become such a big part of our lives, not everything we share needs to become a permanent digital record. On many phones, simply taking a photo means it will take up space in your camera roll forever,” WhatsApp said in a Blog.
The Facebook-owned company maintained its position to keep users’ data private and safe. WhatsApp said: “View Once media is protected by end-to-end encryption” thus ‘view once’ media is available to only the sender and the receiver.
However, Child rights advocates have also raised concerns with this feature as they believe it will be used to perpetuate and cover evidence of child sexual abuse.
Meanwhile, WhatsApp is having none of that. The social media company argues that the feature is for regular WhatsApp users who are sharing “something sensitive like a Wi-Fi password, a quick reaction to a moment in time” or even sharing “some new clothes you’re trying on at a store”. Hence the need to view once and delete video or image records.
