7 best websites to get free books online 2022

What sweeter news is there to a book lover than to hear that over a thousand books online, covering a wide range of subjects, from romance novels to computer tech, to horror, to comics, and many others have been made available to him/ her for free?

It’s absolutely free, so you are not going to spend a single dime probably except on data.

Thanks to the amendment of the Sonny Bono Copyright Term Extension Act of 1998, free books on nearly any subject you can think of are all over the internet, ready to be downloaded, read, and shared. You can have access to works published as far back as 1923, so you know it’s gonna be a jolly good ride from here.

Books downloaded are available under this act and should be free without retribution under U.S. copyright law. Stay with me then, and get ready as I share with you many websites which will give access to tens of thousands of free books online (plus movies, songs, and cartoons (yay😁!)) available under this act.

1. Free computer books

This site has an extensive collection of free computer books and includes lecture notes. Every subject in computing and programming language you can think of is represented in free computer books

There are also textbooks, extensive lecture notes, and many more. Some genres available include computer science, data science, computer engineering, Java, and network and communications books. There are also many subgenres giving you an easy way to find the book you are after. The only negative about the site is that it lacks variety in file formats and everything on the site is just hyperlinked to other sites.

2. Librivox

Looking for a way to get access to audiobooks without having to pay? Then this is the site for you. Audiobooks which are usually so costly are available on Librivox and are absolutely free. They also come in multiple languages and have a large collection of children’s audiobooks.

Librivox has many volunteers that work to release quality recordings of classic books. Every single title here is absolutely free, and this brings joy to the hearts of those of us who have had the experience of paying ridiculously high fees for substandard audiobooks.

3. ManyBooks

This site is one of the best resources on the web for free books online in a variety of download formats such as EPUB, MOBI, PDF, FB2, RTF, and HTML. A whole variety of titles to be selected from and the genres include more than just classics and Creative Commons books but have a wide range of other genres. Their categorization of books is so great that it makes finding what you love so much easier. It lets you browse free books by language, author, or genre.

They also have the ManyBooks Articles page which makes available to you articles such as “Books like Hatchet” and even book reviews. Downloading books requires a free account login and the books are also readable online through the site’s built-in book reader.

Also available are their RSS feed and social media accounts which help you stay abreast with new ManyBooks titles and get updates respectively. Some books on the site do cost money though.

4. Sacred Texts

If you are interested more in religious books and writings, this site is the place for you as it has a large collection of such as these. Not only does this site have books about religion but it also has books on mythology, folklore, and the esoteric in general. You are able to view a list of all the books by title or author or browse by category or subject.

There’s even a random button if you’re unsure of what to look for and want to just read anything. All the books are available online from their website and you can save each page if you want an offline version.

5. Scribd

Scribd, one of the web’s largest sources of published content, with literally millions of documents published every month and organized by category, offers an exciting collection of all kinds of reading materials consisting of Books, audiobooks, documents, sheets of music, magazines, and many others.

However, unlike other sites listed, Scribd is only free for 30 days and you’d have to pay $9.99 every month after the first 30 days of subscription to continue using it. The good news though is that being a member grants you access to the site’s entire database.

6. Feedbooks

Another excellent source for public domain book downloads and thousands of titles that are 💯% 🆓. It requires no necessary login and books can be saved to your device in moments without a user account as an EPUB file.

It has a sorting menu that helps you to browse public domain books by category and allows you to arrange the list of books by release date or best selling. It also has filters that help you locate books in a particular genre, language, and more.

It’s an ad-free website so you need not worry about pop-up adverts and other such distractions.

Since some parts of the site have books that cost, the search tool mixes in paid and free books and this sometimes could be disheartening to the reader who would have been eager to read that book.

7. International Children’s Digital Library

ICDL has a wide and large collection of high-quality free books for children globally. These books are scans of the physical books so each page is a separate image you can scroll through and read.

Recently added, is the search by country option, which helps you to access books available in a specific country. There are also helpful links so you can browse the library by language, character, shape, format, genre, and many more on the homepage.

Conclusions

The aforementioned websites are the most popular and most reliable in finding good free books to read. Also kindly note, that this is not in any order. Hope this made your day as much as it made mine when I found them. Go, read, and live in your second world.
