Everything well achieved comes only with determination. This indicates that when we put our minds to something and strive hard, we will surely achieve it. Yvette Tetteh, a 30-year-old Ghanaian athlete with determination and perseverance, made history as she swam across the Volta River from Buipe to Ada.
The sole purpose of her outrageous adventure was to be an inspiration to Ghanaians who had set targets but couldn’t achieve them to work hard and never give up on their dreams. As a campaigner and environmental activist, Yvette also wanted to use this means to educate Ghanaians about the effects of environmental degradation. Not only that, but apart from being the first ever to swim that distance and setting a record, her priority was to encourage the protection of human and natural resources in our communities and in the country as a whole.
Starting her journey from Buipe across the Volta Lake, it is about a hundred and forty kilometers to Ada. Yvette Tetteh had the courage to swim with the help of some medics and supporters who were with her throughout the journey. They made sure they were with her at any given point in the challenge to attend to her if she needed help and also cheer her on.
Buipe is a tiny town located in the Savannah Region of northern Ghana. It serves as the administrative center for Central Gonja District while Ada is a neighborhood in the Dangme East District. It is located in the southeast Ghanaian region of Greater Accra. Volta Lake, the largest artificial reservoir in the world based on surface area, is located behind the Akosombo Dam, which generates a substantial amount of Ghana’s electricity.
Yvette’s accomplishment of her task was overwhelming and applauded by the people in the community. Her victorious task has brought environmental organizations and government agencies together to promote the purpose of her challenge. They vowed to eradicate the rate at which material wastes are deposited in our water bodies, which causes environmental degradation. They also promised to educate citizens on the importance of recycling waste materials in order to protect the country from natural disasters.
Ghanaians are very proud of Yvette Tetteh’s win as the first Ghanaian female ever to swim across the Volta Lake from Buipe to Ada. This is a simple indication that we can all achieve our dreams if we set our minds on them with determination and hard work.
